Enrollment & Eligibility
All registered UCSF students have access to in-clinic healthcare services provided by Student Health & Counseling. However, only enrollees in the Student Insurance Plan have coverage to medical, mental health, dental, vision, prescription and travel insurance benefits provided by the plan.
Who Is Automatically Enrolled
• Registered UCSF students paying a premium for the Student Insurance Plan are automatically enrolled. The annual cost is prorated over Fall, Winter and Spring quarters. Summer coverage is included for all students registered for Fall, Winter and Spring quarters.
Who is Eligible to Enroll
• Non-registered students, researchers or other persons in educational roles engaged in a formal program of UCSF, which is approved by the Chancellor, may pay the Scholars and Researchers Health Plan fee (SRHP). This includes previously enrolled students who take time away from the standard curriculum of their school to pursue a course of research or other approved scholarly activity. Coverage is elected by term. To enroll, complete a Scholars & Researchers Application 09-10.
• Students on University approved leave of absence may elect to pay and enroll in the Scholars and Researchers Health Plan (SRHP) for a maximum of one quarter per lifetime. To enroll, complete the Scholars & Researchers Application 09-10 and attach a copy of the LOA form provided by the Office of Admission and Registrar.
• Eligible dependents of fully enrolled/registered UC San Francisco students and researchers may elect to pay and enroll in the Student Insurance Plan. Eligible dependents must be one of the following:
1. Legally married spouse.
2. Domestic Partner who resides with the student. Legal domestic partner must submit an affidavit at time of enrollment.
3. Child who is dependent upon student for support and maintenance and is under the age of 19 (25 if full-time student).
To enroll, complete a Dependent Application 09-10.
Who is Not Eligble to Enroll
• Visiting students participating in UCSF programs but enrolled at another college or university are not eligible for coverage under the UCSF Student Insurance Plan.
• Other UC students from other UC campuses are not eligible for coverage under the UCSF Student Insurance Plan, but they may seek urgent care at Student Health and Counseling Services as part of University of California recipriocity agreement.
• Student employees who are regular status employees who apply and are approved for ‘Reduced Fee Enrollment’ are not eligible for coverage under the UCSF Student Insurance Plan as well as in-clinic services at SHCS. See ‘Reduced Fee Enrollment’ to learn more.

Q: How do I obtain my personalized ID card?
A: Download your personalized ID card today!
Q: May I continue coverage if I am on a Leave of Absence?
A: You may continue coverage if you are taking a leave of absence for one quarter per lifetime by enrolling in the Scholars and Researchers Health Plan. You can enroll by submitting a copy of their signed leave of absence form along with payment for the application fee and a completed Scholars & Researchers Application 09-10. A Leave of Absence form can be obtained at the Office of Admission and Registrar.
Q: Can I waive the Student Insurance Plan?
A: Students and researchers who have access to an insurance plan that meets a minimum benefits level will be eligible to waive the Student Insurance Plan. To learn more, see Insurance Waiver.
Q: Does SHCS provide COBRA or an extension of insurance plan?
A: SHCS does not provide COBRA, because the UCSF Student Insurance Plan is not an employer-sponsored plan. SHCS does provide an extension option for eligible enrollees. To learn more, see End of Coverage: Insurance Options.
