Out-of-Area Care & Coverage

If you are out of the area (within US) and experiencing a medical emergency, call 911 or go to the nearest ER. If you are out of the country, and experiencing a medical emergency, call a SOS International 24-hour Alarm Center or visit a local health care provider.

For out-of-area medical care and urgent situations, please mind the following:

Out of the Bay Area:

Medical Concern:
Call SHCS at 415-476-1281 and ask to speak to a nurse or schedule a phone consultation with one of the SHCS providers. If you need to see a specialist in your area, you will need pre-authorization from a SHCS. To find a specialist in your area, you will want to search for providers on the California Foundation for Medical Care network.

Urgent Concern:
Call SHCS at 415-476-1281 and ask to speak to a nurse or visit an urgent care facility. You are free to visit any urgent care facility, but will get additional coverage per your insurance if an in-network facility is utilized. Visit California Foundation for Medical Care to find an in-network facility.

If you are experiencing an urgent mental health issue after normal business hours, you can speak with a mental health provider via our Mental Health Crisis Line. Dial 415-476-1281 and press option 7. This line is answered Monday through Friday 5 pm to 8 am and 24 hours on weekends and holidays.

Outside of California:
