Lisa has been a Nurse Practitioner for over 30 years. For most of her NP career she has worked with a student health population. She has also worked in Adolescent Medicine at Juvenile Hall where she ran a research study focusing on sexual health. She also provided care to prostitutes in San Francisco at a specialty clinic and also at SFGH. As an RN Lisa worked in neurosurgery and pediatrics.
Special Area of Focus
Lisa started our IUD program here over 5 years ago and has placed over 400 IUDs to date. She has a specialty in Women’s Health and has counseled many patients regarding sexual satisfaction and concern. She had an audioblog called SexTalk which is available on our website.
Lisa is actively involved in our PrEP program, providing pre exposure prophylaxis to those who are at risk for HIV. She also enjoys providing primary care to all patients.
Lisa enjoys travel and has been to Europe, Asia, India many times and has also lived in China. She is a photographer and writer. She is married and has 2 boys.

Nurse Practitioner Lee Marshall Fagen has been a Nurse for over thirty years, twenty-two as a Nurse Practitioner. Before coming to UCSF SHCS, Lee worked for more than sixteen years in UC Berkeley’s student health services. His NP work has included migrant farmworker clinics, methadone treatment center with the VA, teen clinics, and STD clinics. As an RN, Lee worked in ICU, ER, and served in Peace Corps/Ecuador.
Special Area of Focus
In addition to College Health, Lee has an interest in Sexual Health and Sexually Transmitted Infections and helps patients make informed decisions around their sexual health issues. Lee enjoys providing sensitive and nonjudgmental care to diverse populations. He is a proud ally of the LGBTQI communities.
Lee enjoys art/sculpting in his spare time. He is married and has an elementary school-aged son.
Marilyn Metz, MD

Dr. Metz is the newest physician at UCSF Student Health and Counseling Services, having joined the care team here in May 2017. Before coming to Student Health, Dr. Metz worked in a variety of clinical settings, including Kaiser-Permanente, the San Mateo County Health System, and most recently at the Apple Wellness Center in Cupertino, CA.
Special Area of Focus
In 2006, Dr. Metz co-founded the Arthur H. Coleman Community Health Foundation in the Bayview Hunters Point neighborhood of San Francisco, where she worked for several years with a multi-disciplinary team to combat the stark health disparities affecting the residents of that sector of the city. She is still involved in community outreach in Bayview Hunters Point, and continues to advocate for culturally competent health and wellness services in medically underserved communities.
In addition, Dr. Metz has a special interest in treating metabolic disorders, such as diabetes, hypertension, and hypercholesterolemia, all with the aim of preventing or delaying the onset of heart disease. Helping patients pursue their particular balance of mind, body and spiritual well-being – a balance that is essential for achieving overall wellness – is a significant part of Dr. Metz's approach to helping patients achieve optimal health.
Dr. Metz enjoys working collaboratively with patients, and believes that individuals “know themselves best.” She looks forward to acting as a medical “consultant” and point of support for students, as they pursue health and wellness in graduate school, an exciting season of life, that can be quite stressful at times.
Dr. Metz is happy to be back at UCSF, her alma mater, and back working in San Francisco, where she lives with her husband and 2 children. In her time away from clinic, she enjoys taking dance classes, working at her kids’ schools, volunteering in Children’s ministry, and supporting movements for social justice, wherever they may be found…

Tom Richards MD/MS (Medical Informatics)

Dr. Richards has practiced in a variety of settings including multi-specialty primary care, urgent care, rural family medicine, a staff physician in Yellowstone National Park, and for most of his career, as an emergency department physician.
Areas of Special Interest
Dr. Richards has a particular interest in travel medicine, sports medicine, infectious disease, and health IT with a focus on telemedicine and point of care application development.
Dr. Richards enjoys exploring the Bay Area with his wife Jennifer and dog Oliver. He enjoys reading, writing, and is learning to sail.
Susan Rosen, MD

Dr. Rosen began working with Student Health in 2002. Before coming to Student Health, Dr. Rosen worked as the Medical Director and managing partner at BaySpring Women’s Medical group for twenty years. She is also an Associate Clinical Professor of Medicine and supervises medical primary care residents in clinic
Special Area of Focus
Dr. Rosen holds a special interest in primary care internal medicine with expertise in women’s health, adolescent medicine, and preventative and alternative health care.
Dr. Rosen originated the SHCS Wellness Program in 2005. She has been integral in developing programs to help students be more successful in their academic endeavors and reduce the stress in their daily lives. As a practitioner of yoga and Pilates for over 30 years and a former dancer, she brings an expertise and sense of balance that informs her work with students. Dr. Rosen has been married over 30 years, has two children and conducts Relationship workshops with Dr. Raynor.
Pam Schute, MD

Dr. Schute began working at UCSF Student Health in 2013. Prior to joining Student Health Dr. Schute worked as a physician at UC Santa Cruz SHC and was the medical director of Texas Woman's University SHC. Her diverse career includes physician at Mission Neighborhood Clinic in San Francisco, general medical officer at the U.S. Embassy in Germany, assistant professor of OB/GYN at University of Puerto Rico, and attending OB/GYN physician at Highland Hospital in Oakland. Dr. Schute is board certified in OB/GYN and participates annually in recertification.
Special Areas of Focus
Dr. Schute has an interest in reproductive health and sports injuries. Procedures available include IUD insertion and removal, Nexplanon insertion and removal, minor skin biopsy with suture repair, laceration repair, orthopedic splinting, and treatment of common and genital warts.
Dr. Schute enjoys hiking, camping, biking and skiing. She takes her dog, Bravo, to the beach (almost) every day. Dr. Schute is married with 2 grown children.
