Support for our AAPI Community

Student Health and Counseling Services (SHCS) joins the UCSF community in solidarity with the Asian, Asian-American, and Pacific Islander communities in the face of the most recent attacks and expressions of anti-Asian bias. These are not isolated events and we condemn these attacks. Since the start of the pandemic, we have witnessed a frightening increase in acts of anti-Asian violence, xenophobia, and harassment, which painfully compounds the historic invisibility, systemic erasure, and othering experienced by AAPI communities. In the past year alone, the national coalition Stop AAPI Hate has documented over 3,700 hate crimes against Asians, Asian-Americans, and Pacific Islanders in the U.S., with 1,691 of these occurring in California. More than 700 of those incidents occurred in the Bay Area, with the majority specifically in San Francisco

These acts of hate, in the context of the global pandemic, the attack on the United States Capitol, acts of racial violence against African-Americans, and the on-going epidemic of gun-violence in the US are undoubtedly impacting the mental health and well-being of our UCSF community. Direct and indirect exposure to such events can be troubling, concerning, and traumatizing and result in many emotional reactions. SHCS is committed to listening, offering support, and connecting with AAPI staff, students, and student organizations in the fight against anti-Asian racism.

SHCS is open during regular business hours, providing all mental health services through telehealth. 24/7 crisis support is available by phone at 415-476-1281 (option 2).
